PARKVILLE, MD — A fortunate individual in Parkville has claimed a $50,000 prize after their Powerball ticket matched a sufficient number of digits in the January 8 draw, as revealed by Maryland Lottery representatives on Thursday. The ticket was purchased at J Convenience on 8765 Satyr Hill Road. The winning numbers included 1, 20, 36, 38, and 43, with the Powerball number 24 and a Power Play of 2x.

This achievement marks Maryland’s first $50,000 Powerball win for the year 2025, following a $100,000 win on the year’s first day. In the same drawing, 10,261 Marylanders collected Powerball prizes ranging from $4 to $100. With no jackpot winner, the next drawing on January 11 offers a massive prize of $263 million as an annuity or $117.7 million in cash.

The Lottery advises all ticket holders to sign their tickets promptly, store them safely, and ensure they claim their winnings within 182 days from the draw date.

From Toothpick to Fortune: San Jose’s Newest Millionaire

In the bustling city of San Jose, a jackpot guardian angel paid a visit to an unsuspecting Scratchers player, transforming their ordinary day into something much more extraordinary. Stopped by a convenience store, Jane Doe, with the grace of a master archaeologist brushing off dust, picked up what would soon reveal itself to be a $1 million gem.

Upon scratching away the glittery surface of the ticket, Jane’s jaw dropped to the floor faster than her favorite sitcom’s punchlines. “I guess I’ll finally stop saving for that inflatable giraffe I wanted,” she quipped, as friends and family gathered around, incredulously gaping at the shining symbols of fortune on her ticket.

While some might say winning is sheer luck, Jane believes her unconventional party trick of scratching tickets with a rare, antique toothpick sealed the deal. “It’s all about the technique,” she laughed, clutching her winning ticket as securely as if it were a newborn kitten.

The store clerk, who had sold Jane the now-legendary ticket, was equally thrilled, declaring himself as her lucky charm and offering to polish all her future lottery picks. San Jose hasn’t seen such buzz since the annual salsa-dancing contest was announced last spring.

Jane’s future plans? Besides buying that inflatable giraffe, she plans to invest wisely, perhaps in a large pool filled with nacho cheese to accompany her giraffe-riding adventures. As the wise say, never underestimate the power of a deliciously irresistible snack.

Of course, winning such an amount doesn’t come along every day, reminding everyone to never lose hope but perhaps to reconsider using antique toothpicks as the unexpected tool of prosperity.
